Yes, but that was a change specifically by the DVD "committee" (or whatever) - as they decided the specific "Video" label was too limiting. Similarly, "GSM" initially stood for "Groupe Speciale Mobile" - which was the name of the committe set-up to initially draw-up the recommendations. Once real networks were actually in operation, and the committe was disbanded, it seemed appropriate to change it to something else - "Global System for Mobile communications" (although that's sometimes said to be "Global System for Mobiles"). |
