The AVR instruction set is actually very easy to learn, just like the 8052 instruction set. Which one is easier is probably the result of which one you started out with.

The PIC instructions can be very confusing. This will only matter for someone writing the code in assembler. Not sure about the availability of a good-enough free C compiler. The Microchip commercial compilers falls a bit short.
