I see that there's an SO-8 of the part that you mentioned, Michael. If it's not too difficult to force the device to do what I want, perhaps a small PCB, potted in epoxy so the end-user can't fiddle with it, would do the trick. I've got to a bit of reading to establish whether it can be made to work as I hope.
