Here is info on the socket that I mentioned. This is a reliable 'coffin style' socket for SO-16 devices in 300-mil wide packages. The socket mounts on the same pad footprint as the SO-16W SPI memory part and as long as you take care of the necessary keepouts around the socket it can be used during initial product development / validation phases and then removed for volume production.
