NXP chips may not be the cheapest. But they have extremely good peripherials. The timers aren't minimalistic. Most peripherials can use FIFO or DMA. There may be semi-duplex acceleration or auto-bauding for UART. There are large sets of clock divisors to keep everything rocking - or slowing down - depending on power consumption/performance needs.
