Letting the microcontroller convert from BCD to 7-segment output most definitely isn't something innovative. It's just one of the things any half-competent developer should know. Every school book about microcontrollers might probably mention it, but the level of innovation is practically zero.

Discussing a battery charge indicator based on two LED driven with different base voltages does show an idea that is not common and do have its merrit because of the simplicity. It's always interesting when someone describes a way to do something differently, even if the specific implementation may not be generally applicable.
