I suggest you have a look at 1) the datasheet for P89V51RD2 2) Flashmagic (free from esacademy.com) you will see that that way for the cost of 2 chips (you will also need a MAX232(equivalent)) you get everything needed to program and erase the P89V51RD2 (except a power supply, but I suppose you can find something giving 5V in your junk pile). that was the cheapie, but if you can afford about $100 you will have much more 'fun' buying and working with a SILabs devkit.
