#175899 - Current free versions

Borland have a free edition, but I can't say I would recommend it. Too much water has flown under the bridges.

No, I wasn't talking about their free "museum" ones (their term!).

I meant the current, up-to-date, "TurboExplorer" range: http://www.turboexplorer.com/

The key limitation for me was that the "TurboExplorer" C++ wouldn't allow external libraries - like AsyncPro - so that was no use for me.

Microsoft have their Express editions. But it has a number of limitations

See: http://www.8052.com/forumchat/read/175898
I haven't found any significant limitations that affect the kind of PC stuff that I do.
(which sounds pretty similar to the kind of stuff that Oliver's trying to do)

I have tried it, hated it, and either switched back to VC6 (ancient but good)

I never had VC6; my first was a paid-for VS-2003 - so I see no big differences with the 2005 and later freebies...

Interestingly enough, on another forum, someone is complaining about how they hate Eclipse and long to go back to lovely VS 2005!

Which all goes to show that it's largely a matter of taste!
