#174893 - Ethernet Redux |
I have a "potential" (quoted because you never know how serious new customers are) project that would see up to a hundred serial devices in the field, connected via Ethernet. There are lots of serial-to-Ethernet adapters around, and I've some experience with the Lantronix ones.
HOWEVER, it looks like what they all do is create distant virtual com port access to the device and this is NOT suitable for the customer. Web type programmers just don't "get" serial communication and I've run into this many times. Maybe the development environments or languages favour other protocols? In any event I need to look beyond virtual com. The adapter product web pages talk about lots of different protocols but I think they are just different options for configuring the unit, not actually for run-time operation. Lantronix has NOT been helpful when contacted. I'm too small potatoes I guess. So my question: does anyone have experience with a product that allows some other interface/protocol that will allow a web/network programmer to talk to a distant serial device? |
