#173307 - I normally use one partition Responding to: ???'s previous message |
What I've found is safest is to use two drives, one being a small, e.g. 10-15 GB drive as the "C" drive, and the other, in my case as large as I happen to have, as the "D" drive.
Nothing that isn't part of the OS ever goes on the "C" drive. All app's, data, etc, goes on the "D" drive. At installation time, I use a second (spare) drive onto which I install the same OS, whether it's Win98SE, Windows XP, or whatever, and the "D" drive is simply backed up to external media not visible to the OS as mass storage every day. The "C" drive is backed up similarly prior to each installation, and duplicated to the spare drive after each time there's a new installation of software. If anything goes wrong, resulting in trouble with the "C" drive, I simply swap that "C" drive for the spare and go to work trying to find out what's wrong. I've had only one problem with the "C" drive, so I can't really say from experience how well this procedure works. However, it's been in place for some time. I've never used VISTA, BTW, and am waiting for the third release of Windows7 before trying that. Mircrosoft's first two or three releases are usually quite premature. RE |
