"Some decades ago" those red LED's almost required you to turn off the lights in order to see them. "Today", LEDs are available that will burn your eyeballs to the back of your skull at 2mA.

I would certainly use a low-current LED in this clever scheme. Something like a Vishay VLMS30 (red) or VLMO30 (orange and even brighter) could be run at 1mA and still give a very bright flash.
