Offer nothing more than remote desktop or VNC and are in fact a complete rip off.
tightVNC is free and offers secure remote login http://www.tightvnc.com/ if you need high security install openSSH and use SSH tunneling. The problem is that if the remote person installed an ssh server on his machine, he must create a login/user account for Raghunathan, which most likely is not an option. VNCs also have the same issue -- the remote person needs to be able to log into the machine, so some credentials need to be set up with the remote machine's VNC server so he can connect to it. Finally -- some network admins may have a lot of ports locked down. Something like WebEx works well for what he wants to do because: a) the transport is over http, so each machine thinks it's talking to a web server and as such ports aren't blocked, b) No user login stuff is required for the remote machine. All that's required is that the remote user allows you to "take over" his machine. -a |
