Things like PC-Anywhere originated long before Windows-XP and before any Windows provided such features - so their continued existence is probably mostly down to the fact that they have long-established user bases...?

If you're starting from scratch, it's probably preferable to stick to the built-in facilities rather than making the client install, configure, and maintain 3rd-party stuff...
