Erik, somehow I missed your reply!! Your reply was totally clear. I didn't know where the diodes were connected, and hence I didn't understand when you said the voltage would be clamped. Absolutely sorry and I apologize. Thanks a million for clarifying. The way I look at port pins have changed, thanks to your replies.
