I have avoided PICs. Their price has always been pretty low, and so there is not a lot of money to be made in replacing them. In the obsolescence business, you have to be close to the original price. If you get greedy and charge too much, then the customers will design you out. Everyone would like for you to be a lower cost, but they will accept the current pricing.
