We fight with issue in every design of main boards at my work place where SMBus is used for server management functionality. Chipsets that are designed with the latest logic almost never seem to support edge rate controls and so switch the bus lines to low level very very fast. As a general design practice almost all devices that are "large BGA device" type parts we end up placing series resistors in the signal leads at each driver. Values then selected to optimize ringing on the traces.
