Sometimes it is feasible to support talking to an I2C device via bit banging techniques. If you mistakenly configure the pins as push-pull drivers the SDA line as a minimum does not work very well. (This actually happened to me once). One can get misled because the SCL output looks just great, expecially when talking to devices that do not interfere with the SCL to try to stretch the clock.
