Don't forget that it's not only the value of the decoupling parts fitted, but also how they are connected and located, as this can have a significant effect on how good the decoupling is.

Also remember that many IC's have awful pin outs when it comes to supply pins, and do not allow for good supply decoupling, no matter what you do or choose.

Get the decoupling right and the improvements can be very significant. Recently I was working with a problem on 155Mbit/s Mux/Demux devices which were transmitting with too much jitter on the signal, just changing the decoupling arrangement lead to a factor of 10 improvement in the jitter measurements.

Also don't forget that proper PCB layout and layups are also a significant part of getting the decoupling right.
