If one is familiar with the language, rules such as that may be adequate, but not always. In English "Chris" may be Christopher or Christine. "Billy" may be male or female. I know a woman named Daryl (no, not the female movie star with that first name) and I went to high school with a girl named Johnnie. One never knows, so Jan's suggestion might save unexpected embarrassment. Come to think of it, "Jan" could be either gender :-)
