#142122 - What's in a name?

Instead of asking why people once used positive grounding in cars, ask why they use negative grounding today? Is there a reason? Or, as has been asked previously, is this just one of those arbitrary not-for-any-reason choices? What are the benefits and consequences of using negative grounding? Does it impact corrosion of body parts? I really don't know if it does or not, but I also can't give you a good reason off the top of my head to choose either standard.

In an automobile, which is isolated by the rubber of the tires, it makes no difference which terminal of the power source is called "ground". Electrolytic corrosion is not an issue in an isolated system. In early autos, I guess it made more "sense" to consider the negative terminal the source since it was "pushing" electrons and the positive terminal was "sucking" electrons. But that's a completely human-centric bias.

I've done no research into it, but my SWAG is that autos switched to negative ground as electronics in cars became more common. Electronics engineers were accustomed to thinking of B+ as the source and the other terminal as "ground".

(For non-native English speakers, SWAG = Scientific Wild-Assed Guess.)
