The original code is implementation dependent because even though the result is undefined by the language, a C compiler will try to generate code that does what it thinks you meant. Usually they guess right, but there's no guarantee. The weird part is that none of the compilers I tried this on gave the slightest hint of a problem. I would have expected a warning message of some kind. I guess that's why there are tools like the one that Frieder mentioned. -- Russ |
