had a lot of fun with that one, about a dozen people were mystified till someone realized "this driver can not co beyond COM9".

That's not fun - that's mindless stupidity on the part of the developer!

Although it's all too common, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to impose any such arbitrary limitation.
This is just pure laziness on the part of someone who couldn't be bothered to do it properly!
