#132506 - Not surprising

You had no DNS resolution at all.

All related.

It seems that you either have both your name servers on the same network segment, or possibly the same machine. The RFC requirement is to have two nameservers. But the reason for this is to encourage them to be physically seperate, so they have no single point of failure.

When 8052.com has a bigger budget, I promise to look into distributing our network across multiple servers. We don't want to outsource anything so improved DNS would require that we obtain additional servers.

We are considering spinning our server off into two or three, but I doubt they'd be hosted by different companies so we'd still have a certain vulnerability. I'm also not convinced that the demand we put on the server really requires we split it into multiple servers. I think the load on the server that has caused us problems in the past is due to a process going out of control and bringing the server down due to excessive load.

This evening I've spent some time reworking these processes, with some fail-safe checking to hopefully throttle how much load they can create before they kill themselves rather than taking the server down with them. Hopefully that will improve the situation. I'm more concerned with frequent slow-downs or unavailability rather than network connectivity problems like today that happen once every year or two.

Regards,
Craig Steiner
