I've found it very handy to have that connection on the probe that "tells" the 'scope whether it's a 1x or 10x probe that's in use. If you want that feature to work, you'd best stick with probes that support that function.

I've had remarkably good luck with probes purchased on eBay. There's probably reason to suspect probes of the "latest, greatest" generation, unless they're new, in which case they won't be cheap, but I have routinely acquired good fully equipped 400-500 MHz probes on eBay for a couple of hundred bucks each.
