One problem, certainly, with open-source documentation, is that nobody verifies it. Does it really reflect the realities in the currently released code? Does it really state how one is expected to use it? Does it really contain the latest modifications and proper descriptions of those mod's to the resulting work product? Does it have correct default pathnames, for example? Surely you see what I mean I sympathise and I agree that docs are usually the least well developed part of open source apps. Don't forget though, that open source differs in one key respect from closed source software - you have direct access to the author. If poor/lack of documentation is a barrier to you using that application then contact the author and tell him what is needed. Open source authors welcome feedback; it's part of the community thing.
