in C (at least this case) the definition of what something is set equal to must be before the equate. If you want food_on_plate, you must pick up the plate first, that is 'forward' Do I misunderstand you or is the above a typo or is it the C works backwards, all must be above its use' You say tomatoe, I say tomahto, i think naah know, we both mean the same. so can we agree what is used must be ABOVE it's usage?
