Strap a big magnet to their butt and use on of Suresh's reed switches :)
I do not remember for what, but for some purpose my wife got some very flexible stuff that was magnetic. I do not recall exactly but think it is a novel way of hanging curtains. I do not know if the caretakers at this "elderly home" (I guess it is not the building that is elderly) can sew such in the residents nightwear, but if that is possible, there may be a simple solution in this.
