An optical InfraRed interrupter might be all you need on each side of the bed if the goal is to detect when a patient is attempting to get out of bed. if there is a reflector on the foot-end of the bed, and a transmitter and receiver at the head end, it would detect when the patient's leg is in the path.
two problems 1) the optical line need be in front of the bed (when you get out your feet do not get under the bed) 2) shoes, dropped books Erik |
