would definitely be a possiblity. Since the deviation between empty and occupied bed is quite dramatic you would not need any of the fancy A/D precision and zero compensation reading it.

They are typically not the best source re price, but for a view od loadcells have a lok at http://www.omega.com.

While I have no idea what just a loadcell would cost, here is an idea about pricing: The scales I designed the code for came to $98 retail for the economy model of the series. That was electronics, housing, labor markup atc in addition to the loadcell.
