clip 2 meters on, one across the DC motor (not the motor relay, THE DC MOTOR), the other across the power connections to the brake (not the brake realy, THE BRAKE) put both meters next to each other and observe.

If you do not have 2 meters, beg, steal or borrow, DO NOT rely on "observations", (I have always been screwed when doing so)
