the '51 family is by no means outdated

Indeed.

However, the '51 family has been around for a long time - which means that there is a great deal of material out there that is now outdated.

In just the same way that cars have been around for a long time - the basic principles remain the same, but a 20 year old book on car technology would not cover many of the things now standard on modern cars...
