I've also been looking at some modern development systems using the ATmega family of MCUs, but I'd gain a lot of satisfaction from learning to assemble for the 8052 anyway
the '51 family is by no means outdated, new derivatives are appearing on a regular basis.
However, the new derivatives are FLASH based, it's the EPROM that's outdated, not the '51
