As I understand the 'HC573 the circuit logic seems correct. There are several things to consider though...

1) I think you could run into some trouble if you tried to daisy chain one of these opto-isolated buffers behind another one of the same design.

2) You should study the H->L and L->H propagation delay skew of the opto coupler to make sure it does not distort the MIDI waveform too much. More than 3 or 4% distortion could make it hard for the downwind UART to reliably detect the data.

3) I see no problem with adding a second 'HC573. Worst case is that you would have to lower the 10K resistor some so that the rise time speeds up with the added capacitance of another 8 chip inputs.
