There may actually be a way to use the 87C51 to be the keyboard controller and still get its data to the PC via USB type interface. One practical scheme used by many is to use the chip FT232R from FTDI (www.ftdi-chip.com). This chip interfaces to the MCU via its UART interface lines and then transports the UART data over to the PC on a USB connection. On the PC side the USB interface terminates into a driver provided by FTDI that makes the external MCU appear as a COM: port on the PC. This is not a USB HID device and as such does not immediately make the keyboard look like a standard keyboard to the PC so the PC side may require some additional software work.
