For many linkers, .lnk would probably be an input file to the linker.
But anyway - as noted, Windows don't open the files to look at them. It does pattern-matching on name and makes assumptions. Windows can do better, but not many are making use of all the meta functionality with multiple file forks, extended file attributes etc. Log time ago, it was quite common to use the extension .doc for plain text documents. There was no Windows Word to introduce any confusion. People saw the .doc extension and performed the simple pattern matching - aha, a plain-text file. |
