#179008 - 5V configurable bus expansions?
I work with a number of microcontrollers where the GPIO pins can be configured as high-impedive inputs or inputs with weak pull-up or weak pull down or as push-pull outputs. But all the processors I work with have 3.3V logic levels - but normally with 5V capable inputs.

But are there any intelligent bus-expansion chips, or level converter chips, that can give a similar result? I.e. where a 3.3V processor can control a large number of signals, and switch each pin between tristate, activelly driven high, activelly driven low, passively driven high or passively driven low. Optionally with the ability to at the same time read back the logic level of the signal?

With the processors I use, I can very easilly build a IC tester for 3.3V logic chips and use weak pull-up or pull-down while detecting inputs and outputs. But what about the ability of doing the same with 5V logic chips while still using a 3.3V processor? After all, the majority of really nice microcontrollers do use 3.3V and not 5V external logic levels.
