Because, for example, you might want (some of) your RAM to be non-volatile.

There are plenty of applications where it is useful to have RAM not cleared by reset; eg

  • Power-saving: the processor is put into a very-low-power mode, from which the only escape is Reset, but the RAM is maintained at its "data retention" supply level;

  • Error logging; eg, diagnostics accessible after a Watchdog restart.
