Especially when it's just 1 master and 1 slave (possibly the case here) - so no addressing is required.
I do not, specifically if it is to be implemented in software. IIC can wait, SPI can not. also as far as SPI is "simpler" have a look at error detection/recovery. In SPI you need all kinds of back-and-forth, in IIC all you need is a NAK. anyhow, in my opinion, using chips w/o hardware interfaces for what you need does not make any sense today, in the days when the king of diamonds were still a knight we had to, but no more.
