#170301 - It's not that easy to damage the PHY

Since the network signals are transformer-isolated from the PHY, I really can't think of any way in which the PHY can sustain any damage that wouldn't be global to the board, since there's no connection between the network pins and the local circuitry it would only damage the PHY if the clamping diodes were to fail (there are series resistors!). The things are, in fact, quite robust!

The PHY's which I've used, and not too recently at that, didn't have leads. They just had contacts that were soldered directly to the PCB. I have no experience with removing them.
