#170080 - Some motivating questions... Responding to: ???'s previous message |

Currently doing a school project on how to measure cable length using 8051 and our group don't know what to start with. Its there any way to start the project going ??? As this is a homework, some motivating questions instead of concrete answers: Which of the parameters of a CAT-5 cable depend on the length? How would you measure them? How are these measurements affected by a short or open circuit at the far end? What is the characteristic impedance of a CAT-5 cable? What happens if the far end of such a cable isn't properly terminated? How can this be used for a measurement of cable length? Why is the measured cable length of a CAT-5 cable always greater than the actual cable length? How can this easily be corrected? Jonathan said:
Is it possible to use a 8051 to measure the length of the cable? Of course! Some additional circuitry might be needed, though... Kai Klaas |
