In terms of user convenience, the USB stick certainly wins hands-down.

Yes, it's a lot harder for the embedded device - which is why the OP really needs to be clear whether this user convenience is justified for his particular system.

If the USB stick is a definite hard requirement, then it seems highly unlikely that an 8051 is the correct processor choice...
