Having built/used hundreds of linear supplies over the years, I have to wonder if one can really accuse linear regulators of generating any ripple at all. They may not totally remove the AC mains frequency from the input, but don't generate any if they are reasonably implemented. They may propagate mains frequency ripple if inadequately filtered, but that's a design error.

In these PFC days it will soon always be irrevelant what a regulator does to "AC mains frequency"
