#184917 - Switchers ARE beautiful... Responding to: ???'s previous message |
...as to their efficiencies! The LM2674 offers more than 95%! It stays cold, so that you might think it's not running at all.
A switcher also helps to make a circuit immune against wide supply voltage variations when the mains voltage fluctuates, without wasting huge amounts of power as when using linear regulators. This is an important advantage just when designing circuits for industrial applications. I really like switchers from these two points. But when it comes to sensitive OPamp circuits, I strictly ban the switchers from the analog boards. Then I take another expert for this job, the good old non-LDO linear regulator! The switchers are used "only" for the preregulation to keep the input voltage of linear regulators at a constant and a rather low level. If this level is set slightly above the minimum input voltage of linear regulator the heat dissipation is tremendously reduced and only small heatsinking, if at all, is needed. So, I take two experts for the whole job, the ultra efficient switcher and the ultra clean linear regulator. Kai Klaas |
