#181438 - Proper names and colloquialisms Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Hi Andy,
In keeping with Richards contribution, I too would call it a pound sign because in your stated case it follows the number. If I were forced to call it something else I would probably call it the number sign, or the tic-tac-toe board. I also noticed Maartan brought up a few more cases, so I would like to add the following to the discussion. The ^ is commonly called a "hat," but its proper name is a "caret." The \ is commonly called a "backslash," but its proper name is a "slash." The / is commonly called a "forward slash," but its proper name is a "stroke." The ~ is commonly called a "wavy thing," but its proper name is a "tilde." The * is commonly called a "star," but its proper name is an "asterisk." The & is commonly called an "and symbol," but its proper name is an "ampersand." I have no idea what the @ is properly called. I always hear it called the "at" symbol, which is at least accurate, but frankly Maartan's "monkey tail" works as well for me. I hope you all feel two cents richer. Joe |
