#180754 - GNU assembler (gas - from binutils)
Responding to: ???'s previous message
I am reluctant to mention this, as it's abandoned for ages (since 2002), but for the completeness' sake... There is an 8051 port for the GNU Binutils' assembler (a.k.a. as or gas) and linker (ld). For those who don't know the GNU toolchain: these are the underlying assembler/linker for gcc (but of course there is no 8051 port for gcc, as of now). This is available as a patch against binutils v2.11 here and here; also as binaries on the Web51 pages (under "Current version" - in fact, the Web51 project was the reason why its author developed this port of binutils).

This might be an alternative to SDCC's assembler if a free linkable assembler is required; unfortunately, both have not quite standard syntax.
