What I've always used in place of 555's when I needed simple oscillator was a CMOS schmidt-trigger with a resistor in feedback. Aside from the need for a cap to gnd on its input, the CMOS schmidt-trigger always produced a quieter, more stabile oscillator, easy enough to control by using a NAND schmidt-trigger, and much less likely to perturb the Vcc to Gnd voltage. That's just my own opinion, though ...
