A website that makes it more difficult to find the chips the potential customers want will not help sell more of their chips. It will help sell their competitors' chips.
Not so, if you are "looking for a chip for an app" without having much of an idea what, besides the app, you are looking for, the websites are excellent. HOWEVER, if, what you are looking for is, a chip with a 12bit ADC, 2 comparators, 25MIPS, .... you will be lost. I REALLY think the issue is not just the semiconductor manufacturers, but equilly much the 'decision makers' (per the Peter principle) at those customers that matter (1M+ chips) that are responsible for the state of many semiconductor manufacturers websites.
