Trying to avoid using a PC!

Interfacing a USB based cam (not for detection, but for capturing!) would have been great because of the low cost and availability of the camera. In fact, I am using 8051f340 which has got USB built in, but am too scared to attempt the project since most of the forums and chat rooms are discouraging the development of USB cam i/f, and advising to go for ov6620 or similar sensors. Again, to make a project robust enough to give a 100 percent detection, will be a long project if I start from scratch!! I actually wanted to capture the image and send it through GPRS. Currently I have a plain GSM modem attached to the controller that keeps calling a bank of 4 numbers till some body responds, and also keeps updating them about the intrusion pattern (like , you can know that the guy entered through the bedroom window and is currently near the refrigerator, probably looking for beer). It has multiple inputs for sensing intrusion. It also allows the user to put on/off lights and alarms if he wants to and even talk the burglar (may be chat him up till somebody reaches the place!). I started working on the camera part to send pictures through MMS or FTP, but then found that there are many chinese guys making the whole thing (including multiple camera option) for 150 to 180 USD! This price is with 1 camera. If you need another 3, you can simply plug them in. These days, anything you think of making, they already have! That too, with plenty of options and accessories, all with proper packaging meant for rough shipping.
