So what were the "links", then?

As Grant suggested, it'd be possible to use indexes into an array - rather than pointers - but I'm not sure that it'll actually work out much more (or less) efficient...
Eespecially as everything in XDATA has to be addressed via a "pointer" (the DPTR) anyhow...
