The point is, that no matter how much and what are you documenting, at the moment when you are documenting it you cannot guess what would be unclear in the future. And, you can bet on it that you will document in great detail only the uninteresting parts. You certainly know the related works of Mr.Murphy... ;-)
Btw. this is quite related to teaching - the teacher can't really know what's the key issue which would make the topic crystal clear to the pupil, maybe only a few sentences - that's why he often tries to overwhelm him with all what can be said on the topic, in the hope that that "golden snippet" is surely somewhere there...
